Just Married staring Ashton Kutcher (That 70ís Show) and Brittany Murphy (8 mile) is one of the best romantic comedies I have seen in a long while. Directed by Shawn Levy this is only his second major motion film, his first being Big Fat Liar, he does surprisingly well directing these two energetic actors.
The story starts off in an airport with Tom (Ashton) and Sarah (Brittany) fighting like there is no tomorrow and physically hurting each other. Itís practically all out war between these two. Youíre not sure why they are fighting then Tom goes to his night job as a sit in for the traffic guy on the radio. Thatís where the story begins with him dumping his feelings onto his listeners when he should be reporting the traffic at three in the morning. Seems kind of odd that there is a traffic report at three in the morning? I thought so but the only conclusion I could come up with is that he works for a news talk radio station where there are traffic updates every 10 minutes. This isnít explained at all but it just makes you wonder what is going on and why there needs to be a traffic report so early in the morning. Despite this Tom goes on and tells the story about his nightmare of a honeymoon.
The main theme of the movie is Tom and Brittany being totally honest to each other. However, when Tom throws a ball out the window and Brittanyís dog fetches after it and plummets to his death Tom of course lies about it. Tom tells Brittany a tiny fib and she trusts him so much that she proposes to him right there and they decide to get married. Little does Tom know that Brittany has a small secret that she didnít tell Tom when he asked.
Tom is by far not the type of person that the family would like Brittany to marry. Peter on the other hand is the perfect guy that the family wants Brittany to marry. Little does Tom know that Brittany and Peter ďgot togetherĒ before she met Tom. Brittany finally spills her guts to Tom and he just canít seem to handle it especially when Peter shows up on their honeymoon to try and get Brittany back. Peter just canít seem to let go of Brittany. This is the twist of the movie and keeps you watching it through out because you just donít know who Brittany is going to go for.
What makes this movie work is the great directing of Shawn Levy and the chemistry between Ashton and Sarah. From the very beginning you feel like they are a couple. With the silly nature of Ashton and the great action of Sarah this film just reeked of laughter. The disaster of their honeymoon just makes it great to watch and there are a plethora of hilarious scenes, some racy and some just gross but you just have to laugh.
This is one of those romantic comedies that you throw into your dvd player to pick you up after a bad day. The video and audio are both middle of the road. The video is clear and shouldnít be a factor when you watch the movie. The audio is only in Dobly Digital but in all honestly you really donít need to be blown away with sound in this movie.
The extra features are fair with a commentary by the director Shawn Levy and the two stars Ashton and Sarah. Listening to the commentary you get a good insight for how this comedy was made. I was amazed to realize that there was so much improve acting in this movie. I was also astonished at Ashtonís performance because he was not only doing this movie at night but also filming That 70ís Show during the day. If he wasnít so energetic I donít see how anyone would have been able to pull this off. Thereís also a few deleted scenes with commentary. They are interesting but not spectacular, the commentary helps you along with the scenes, but without it youíll find yourself lost.
Finally, there is a 20 minute feature that was actually shown on Comedy Central before the movie was released. Itís really not that great and not that funny. Itís just Ashton and Sarah along with a host playing a ďjust marriedĒ game where they are asked questions and they have to answer to see how well they know each other. Every now and then they throw in a few cut scenes of the movie.
If you didnít already know I am a sucker for a romantic comedy. So if you are too you should definitely pick this one up. If you are unsure about it go rent it tonight! It would make a great date movie and it will sure have you on the floor laughing!
