Planet of the Apes

Planet of the Apes, what can I say? I can tell you that it wasn't good in my opinion. It seems to be typical of a summer blockbuster. The studio hypes it up a ton and then you watch it and it lacks all the hype and is a disappointment.

Planet of the Apes, what can I say? I can tell you that it wasn't good in my opinion. It seems to be typical of a summer blockbuster. The studio hypes it up a ton and then you watch it and it lacks all the hype and is a disappointment. From the first time I saw the trailers in the theaters I wanted to see this movie. I can tell you now that I'm glad I didn't waste my money going to see it. It's perfect for a rent to check out the movie and the tons of features that are on the 2 disc set. However, I wouldn't want to own the movie.

What disappoints me the most about this film, besides it just not being all that great is the fact that it doesn't follow the original one at all. It starts off in the year 2029 with an American astronaut (Mark Wahlberg) and he crash lands on a planet after blasting way into the future. All he knows is that the planet is ruled by human sized apes, humans are working as their slaves, and doesn't know anything else. Since he crashes on the strange planet he uses his signaling device to call his ship, which leads him back to some wreckage that is thousands of years old. This is where the humans and the apes have their final face off. To make a long story short there was another landing of a space ship in the future that carried an ape. When it lands all the apes think that it's their god and bow down to praise it. Needless to say this is quite ridiculous and the next thing you know the lost human is in the space ship headed towards home. He some how takes a ride back into time and then heads for earth. When he gets there he, of course crash lands again and doesn't die (I swear this guy has to be the luckiest man alive). However, when returns to the year 2000 (you're not exactly sure what year it is but it looks like present day earth) he finds out that the apes rule earth during that time. This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. How can you go back in time before the apes ruled one planet and come to find out that they rule earth? It just doesn't make sense to me. I just blow it off to this is a terrible movie.

With that said and done I will give it this much. The video quality is excellent, however I hate it when the producers of the dvd put the layer change in an important scene! It really takes you out of the movie drama even for that split second. Why can't they put it in a pause in the movie or not at all? It's really annoying I just can't explain to you how annoying it really is.

The audio in the film is also well done. Not only is it in 5.1 Dolby digital but it's also in DTS. A little story about the audio while I was watching the movie apparently I was watching it a little loud. My neighbor knocked on my door for about 5 minutes waiting for me to answer and have her tell me to turn down the bass on my system. I did so with no complaints but wait until I get a sub for my system! I'll have her down at my apartment every time I watch a movie!

All in all this dvd is really put together well. It has a ton of features, so many in fact that I couldn't get though them all. The audio and video are both top quality. It's just too bad the movie just wasn't too good. I definitely say that if you haven't seen this movie go and pick it up at Blockbuster and mess around with it. The features alone are worth the rent, and if you must I guess you can watch the movie. Just remember I warned you!
