Entertainment Center of the Month
Kevin Sorkin's Home Theater

This month we have the privilege of looking at Kevin Sorkin's home theater. Kevin is a 22 year old full time student at UCLA. To achieve the status of having the best home theater in town he worked at Los Angeles International Airport on average sixty hours a week. While Kevin didn't sleep much the pay off was more than worth it all.

Kevin got into the home theater scene about a year and a half ago when he saw Terminator 2 on a big screen with 5.1 sound. He was "instantly hooked" into the home theater ring of the world. His first purchases were a Panasonic 110 dvd player, 5 dvds, and a JVC 36" TV. However, now his home theater has grown considerably. It now consists of 550 dvds, a Denon 5700 receiver, Rotel 971 HDCD cd player, a Sony S550d DVD player, a Pioneer 555 CD Recorder for all those important "backup" copies! He also has a Sony 61" V Seris TV and to engulf him in sound he has Infinity Overture 3 speakers as the main set, a Polk CS1000 as his center, and Infinity Quadrapole as his surround set. Also, Kevin has not one but two subs! He has a Miller and Kriesel 5000 THX sub to the left of the home theater in the corner of the room, and his Velodyne CTS120 sub that is on the right of his home theater.

Kevin's set up is very nicely done. His room is 14' by 15' with his wall unit being on the longer side, and his ceiling is 8' high. The huge wall unit, which houses all his dvds, TV, and speakers took about two days for Kevin to build. It was a custom job designed by him and built by a closet factory. If you are wondering where he got the idea for his wall unit Kevin says, "I got the idea for the unit's designs by frequently reading HT (home theater) mags and seeing pictures on the net of other peoples setups." Also, if you are wondering if it's worth the time and effort to custom build your own set up Kevin has this to say about that. "To anyone considering building a custom unit- It's definately worth it, it adds an incredible 'wow' factor and if your good at negotiating you can get a good deal. The original price I was quoted for the cabinet was approx, $4000, by the time I finished negotiating the price was $2150, much more reasonable huh?" As for the rest of his set up the Infinity Overture 3's are in the front of the home theater, toed in about 20 degrees. The polk center is above the TV, and tilted downward towards the primary seating area, and the Infinity Quadroples are in the back of the room mounted on the wall.

As you can imagine Kevin gets a ton of feedback when people come to see and hear his system. Some people say, "wow!" "turn it down!" and "it's just like being at the movies," which is the best reply anyone can possibly give because the whole goal of an awesome set up is being just like the theaters. Among these reactions Kevin also gets some comments about how well the set up is, being so clean and professional. He has also heard some say that, "that the sound surpasses that of theaters" and of course there's always the "I'm crazy" thrown in there!

When I asked Kevin what his favorite aspect of his home theater was he gave me two answers. The sound and picture that the dvd provides would be his favorite aspect of his home theater saying it's, "incredibly dynamic sound and picture that dvd provides." He is also proud of the wall unit and how it turned out. Kevin says, "It gives the HT (home theater) setup a sense of perminence. I also like the dvd storage shelves on the top of the unit."

You would think that with this awesome set up there couldn't be anything else to add, but there always is something you can add or upgrade. Kevin is looking into a 65" TV, "possibly the Toshiba or the Sony, just as soon as they come down some more in price." Kevin is moving out with the old and in with the new saying, "widescreen is defiantly the way to go for me as I could care less about regular TV, and place much more importance on dvd's. A widescreen would also allow me to realize the full resolution of my anamorphic dvd titles." In the next few years this is going to be the trend and I know I can't wait to own my own HDTV and get some of those HD-DVD players. That's not for a few years down the road but it's coming!

Out of Kevin's huge collection of dvds (550 to 560!) his favorite movies to watch would be Terminator 2 because of it's, "excellent picture and sound, the shotguns in chapter 28, register about 128 db's on my setup and sound crystal clear!" Another one of his favorites is Ninja Scroll, and Ghost in the Shell, "beautiful animation and sound." Lastly, he has to choose The Matrix (one of my most favorite of all time!) saying, "thought provoking story as well as incredible special effects."

I would finally like to thank Kevin Sorkin for being the Entertainment Center of the Month here at dvdfuture.com.
