Criterion Goes Blu!

Here's the newsletter they sent out a few days ago:

Dear Criterion Collection Newsletter subscriber,

We’ve got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.

Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We’ve picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we’ll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.

Here’s what’s in the pipeline:

The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear

Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we’ll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg’s outback masterpiece at the same time.

*****

This is great news as Criterion has a lot of great, classic titles under their belt. Hopefully we'll see great Blu-ray releases from them, and hopefully they won't be as outrageously priced as they are on DVD. Don't count on it though.

Amazon offers 3 for 2 deal and Paramount reboots all of their old Blu-ray titles

Hey all,

Just letting everyone know that Amazon has a sweet 3 for 2 deal going on until May 14th. Check it out here. There are a lot of great titles (34 in all), so be sure to give this sale a look-see before it's too late.

****

Also, Paramount has issued a statement letting it's Blu-ray fans know that all of the previous catalog titles will be re-released on the format. This is contradictory to the original press release, which just stated eight of the previous catalog titles would be reissued.

Here is the full rundown of titles being made available:

"Black Rain," "Coming to America," "Disturbia," "Failure to Launch," "Flags of Our Fathers," "Four Brothers," "Freedom Writers," "Hustle & Flow," "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider," "The Italian Job (2003)," "Letters from Iwo Jima," "The Manchurian Candidate (2004)," "Mission: Impossible," "M-i-2," "M:i:III," "Mission: Impossible - Ultimate Missions Collection," "Nacho Libre," "Norbit," "Payback: Straight Up - The Director"s Cut," "Reds," "Shooter," "Trading Places," "We Were Soldiers," "World Trade Center" and "U2 Rattle & Hum," "Aeon Flux," "Babel," "Black Snake Moan," "Dreamgirls," "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," "Sleepy Hollow," "The Untouchables" and "The Warriors."

****

Finally, we've heard rumblings that Paramount is prepping a special edition Blu-ray release of "The Godfather" in the very near future. We're not sure if it's the entire trilogy or just the first film. We'll keep you posted as news comes in. Also, we've gotten confirmation that Paramount is working on Blu-ray editions of "Beowulf" as well as the summer mega-hit "Transformers." Again, we'll give you more details as they come rolling in.

Now, if only Paramount could assemble a few "Star Trek" films and "Indiana Jones" on Blu-ray, we'd have a great re-launch slate. Wishful thinking, I know.

That's all...for now.

It's a shame that "Beowulf" wasn't included in the launch, nor was "Sweeney Tood" or "Star Trek: TOS" but I'd expect them to coming sooner rather than later. We'll keep you posted as news and releases roll in!

So there you have it, Uni goes Blu in a big way. That leaves just Paramount in the docks. Frankly, I think things are really going to pick up steam now that both studios are on-board. For Universal, getting the Spielberg hits on Blu sooner rather than later will be a smart move and I hope we'll see a release date for, at least, "Jaws" or "Jurassic Park" soon. We'll keep you posted as news comes inalways!!

Even with this major release, Warner has still opted not to include a PiP track. What's the deal with Warner's new release division? I know this wasn't a huge hit, but it seems like Warner's been a bit shy when it comes to extra goodies lately. Oh well, this is still an exciting release and I can't wait to see it on Blu-ray!
